Law and Order Way: Chelsea Piers LO:CI Set

On my way to my union's annual Irish Heritage celebration yesterday evening, I stopped by nearby Chelsea Piers and snapped some photos around the mysterious Pier 62 and Pier 61. Actually, Pier 62 is an outdoor park and recreation area located next to Piers 59, 60 and 61, which comprise the 28-acre Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment complex, with a gym, bowling alley, restaurants, shops, spa, and a health club with an indoor pool, rock climbing wall, golf course, ice skating rink, and much more. The modern day Chelsea Piers complex has been in existence since 1995 and attracts visitors year round. The High Line is located just to the east, where a scene from the LO:CI Season 5 episode "In the Wee Small Hours" was filmed. The truly intrepid can sign up for sailing lessons at the marina by the Hudson River. This afternoon the weather was breezy and overcast, and I enjoyed the view of the river as I strolled around the piers.

I had not been back here in years, since I took my brother bowling here a few years ago. I also wondered where the heck was the true location for Universal Studios, where LO:CI and LO:SVU are filmed when they are not on location in NYC. Well, I got my answer when I walked around to the front of the complex facing West Street, across from the West Side Highway, and spotted some of the trucks used by the LO:CI crew parked outside and inside the Pier 61 lot.  Costumes used by the actors were kept in a storage area nearby. What surprised me the most was spotting Vincent's black Escalade parked just across from the trucks, with the familiar LO:CI placard in the windshield. Nice to know that he was here, I thought, busy bringing Detective Robert Goren to life once again on set. According to the Onlocationvacations.com website, the LO:CI crew was scheduled to be filming in studio today, so, naturally,  that sparked my curiosity. Also surprising is the fact that the Bayview Correctional Facility is located directly across from Chelsea Piers on West Street & West 20th St. Yikes! If any of those inmates ever escape, our intrepid Major Case detectives will have to track'em down! LOL

  5. You're right, Carol! I had forgotten that detail. Actually, I'm not sure it's the same vehicle, but I have to watch "Loyalty" again. It's hard to believe that I haven't seen that episode in awhile, but it's not one of my favorites, anyway.
