In Memoriam: America Acevedo, our beloved mother

Mom fought a fierce battle last summer to recover from pneumonia and the resulting complications, but she finally succumbed last Thursday morning, September 5, 2012, at Brooklyn Hospital. I'm still trying to come to terms with the ordeal we all went thru the past three months, but Mom is finally at peace and has gone to her eternal rest. Our main concern now is how to tell my little brother Alberto the sad news. I have been researching the subject of bereavement and people with developmental disabilities online and have found some useful resources of information, including a booklet that I e-mailed to Alberto's teachers and printed copies for myself and Dad. Following some of the ideas from the booklet, I started a memory garden for Mom on our apartment terrace and a photo album with pictures of us with Mom for Alberto to keep. www.scopevic.org.au
