God bless America, my mom.

My mother, America Acevedo, was born in Lares, Puerto Rico on April 23, 1929 and moved to New York with her family on November 26, l929. She has lived a long and fruitful 83 years on this earth and will soon depart this world, leaving behind her three grown children, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. For those of you who know me on Facebook, I recently posted news of my mom's hospitalization with pneumonia. She fell ill last month and was admitted to Long Island College Hospital on June 22, 20l2. The next evening she went into cardiac arrest and was revived by doctors. Sadly, she was deprived of oxygen for seven long minutes during that time, which I only recently found out. Now we are faced with two choices, either to continue to keep her on life support and send her to a nursing home, or to remove the respirator and feeding tubes that have been keeping her alive for the past ten days. Once we consult with the medical team we will have to make a decision. Mom seemed to be alert at times when my brothers and I visited her last week, but she suffered seizures on Thursday and has been unresponsive ever since. I want her to be at peace and not to suffer any more than she has already. I'm most concerned about my kid brother Alberto. How do we tell him that Mommy isn't coming home? This is so heartbreaking that I can't even describe it. I've already decided to let her go in peace, and we must prepare Alberto for this. Thank you all who have offered your prayers and love during the past week. You have helped to sustain me during this horrible experience and I am truly grateful. God bless all my fellow vixens and Vincent. I love you all! I love you, Mama.
